Sunday morning, Joan and I attended the mass for Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de Porciúnculam at the Pecos National Historical Park… followed by Jemez Pueblo dancers. The church was built after the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 (which also occured on August 11th) and largely through the labor of the ancestors of the current dancers. Pecos Pueblo was abandoned in 1838 when the remaining inhabitants moved to Jemez to avoid Comanche raiders..
The Feast Day is a celebration of the return of the holy relic to the original pueblo… a promise upheld by the local Catholic church. If I got my history straight.
